I am in love!!!! She is incredibly affectionate and loves to lean in for lots of scratches and kisses and is quickly adapting to being the princess of the house, loves her dog beds, the couch and all of her toys. We live about a block from the beach and she loves running around and playing with all the neighborhood dogs. She has been fantastic with everyone she meets. I know that she can swim well because the other day she thought it would be a good idea to go out and say hi to a geese that was swimming around. The geese was not overly happy to see her and flew away and then Chloe happily swam back to shore where I was starting to take my shoes off because I thought I might have to in after her, she was going out a little too far for my liking. :) Her energy level has increased a bit and she does love to play as much as she can but settles quite easily. She will be going to daycare one day a week and we will be starting training classes as soon as the next session starts. I am so happy she found her way into my home.

Chewy, he's a superstar! Has had alot of health issues but the vet is confident its just since he is such a fast growing boy that all his immunity crashed and burned and went to just growing. He had puppy warts, a puppy cold, then these almost like hives, then poor boy got hit with Kennel cough! It was torture for him not being able to play with all his friends but he's back to it again and a happy wiggle butt because of it :) The vet is hoping that he's over the hump now adn should be good for the rest of his life (paws are crossed on that one) Have a few pics, one of him and his buddy Boosie (a blue nose pb) resting after having a wrestling match, one of him posing...we have a friend that takes his dogs to the same park we go to and he takes lots of pics of Chewy because it seems he's a big ham and just poses all over the place for him, lol One of him at the office giving me his puppy eyes wanting to go out.

Hello there, we are desperately searching for our beloved Bub ( chocolate brown male red nose)
and Phat Girl(golden brown both with white chests) and have been for several months. one of your featured dogs in happy trails extremely resembles our Phat Girl and was hoping that a better description of her could be posted , to give a bit of the tragedy so you can determine wether or not u would be able to help is in may of 2010 our babies got out of the yard while we were away and had friends taking care of the house and dogs,and we have been searching ever since. We lived on 80th avenue and 76th street in langley at the time they went missing. If that helps to narrow it down.My wife and i willlnever give up hope to find them again,they are both rf tagged from the spca but despite that they have never been located.A few distinct features on both Bub and Phat Girl are they both have and extra du claw on their back legs Phat Girl only on one side as she chewed one off over time!! they are brother and sister and beautiful dogs we miss them very much and would give anything for them home! Goldie as i mentioned looks so very much like our Phat Girl and was hoping u could help in determining if in fact she was our beloved Phat Girl!!! please respond to goodwood@live.ca with any possible help,it would be greatly appreciated and would mend my wifes broken heart !

I am doing the Great Lake Walk on Sept.18.It is 52 Km around Lake Cowichan and should take me about 10 hours i think to complete.I am raising money for 2 dog rescuesBully Buddies(where we got our sweet boy)and a local rescue Respect A Bull.These are both small rescues that rely on donations to save dogs,give urgent and needed vet care and even surgeries.Would nayone be willing to donat $1, $5 or more!! Miss Ava is the belle of the ball all tuckered out after a day worth of play!Cashew is just one of those dogs that make an impact on all he meets. He is an old soul who turns heads as he prances around town with his human sidekick. If you see him, make sure to say hello!

And Sprocket has two modes--GO GO GO and sleep. Her family keeps her busy on many adventures with biking, backpacking, and tons of hiking! And her most favorite thing to do--disgusting her mom by rolling in the smelliest thing she can find!

And Cassidy Jade (aka the Wiggler) has found herself living beside our Training COordinator Raylee. Raylee couldn't ask for a more perfect neighbor as she now accompanies Raylee all about town showing off her obedience and wooing people all over the place. Raylee is thrilled to take Cass to events like the RAPS Bully Breed Awareness day and Cass is thrilled to show off her ambassador personality. And, she even managed to win over Raylee's somewhat cranky dog, no small feat! Oh Wiggler!

The Rock Star!

Rock is one of the biggest lugheads to ever come through the Bully Buddies program. One of our volunteers swoons at the mere thought of him, and is kicking herself for already having a full house. Rock is dreamy, handsome, smooshable, and turns heads wherever he goes. Seriously, his head is HUGE!! Check out this update from his family:

Thought I'd send you guys some photos of Rock from the past year since Matt adopted him. He's doing amazingly-- continuing to love everything and be loved by everyone who meets him. He's a headturner here in Victoria. We've had people pull their cars over to ask about him, and he's been nothing but a wonderful bully ambassador.He's come a long way in the obedience department, mastering some manners and we're continuelly working on the rest :) He's no longer crated when no one's home, and just sticks to his couch and snoozes like a big baby. Totally fine off leash when we take him for walks up the little mountain here, throughout the woods and at the beach. He loves the water! Swimming's not his strongest ability with his giant head, but he can never resist a stick or log. He's really been a joy to get to know, and watching him grow has been so much fun. He really is the most loving and lovable dog, an eternal suck! Cheers guys, keep up the good work!

Another Tragedy, Another Headline

Our condolences go out to the young child that was attacked last Friday in Surrey. Justice Paradis, only three years old, was rushed to the hospital after being attacked by the dog that lived on the property. This is a horrible incident but, there were many components at play that could have been controlled to make it preventable. Children should ALWAYS be supervised around dogs. Haze, the dog in question, spent a lot of time on the end of a chain, and was reported to not be good with children. So while our hearts go out to the Paradis family, our hearts also go out to poor Haze. He never stood a chance and instead of looking at the factors that created Haze, the media blames the dog.

One of our volunteers wrote this letter to The Province in response to the sensationalized reporting that occurred after the attack.

I am a law-abiding, responsible citizen who happens to have fallen in love with American Pit bull Terriers. I love these dog for the amazing relationship and bond they develop with humans. As a family therapist my dog has assisted me to work with high-risk children and youth who are otherwise slow to trust people.

As a former Animal Control Officer I have also seen firsthand that any dog can bite. For instance, in Vancouver over 50% of dog bite incidents involve German Shepherds; while in Delta over 50% of dog bites involve Golden Retrievers, followed by Labrador Retrievers. What most of the dogs have in common is poor breeding, poor socialization and irresponsible owners. The most recent incident involving the Surrey toddler is reprehensible, but was entirely avoidable. Keeping any dog outside on a chain is a recipe for disaster. I have been bitten twice by dogs- one a Bouvier, the other a German Shepherd- both these dogs were under-socialized, poorly bred and had owners that were not very responsible. I did not blame the breed of dog, I placed blame where it belonged, with the owners. Irresponsible owners are attracted to multiple different dog breeds and when one breed of dog is not easily available they just move onto another breed of dog. In Lower Mainland cities where Breed Specific Legislation is in effect one tends to see more Dobermans, Rottweilers, and Mastiff breeds owned by irresponsible owners as these dogs are thought to be "tough looking" by people who should not own any breed of dog. In response to dog bite strength, German Shepherds and Rottweilers have actually been found to have a stronger bite than Pit Bulls, therefore if a ban was going to be based upon potential bite damage then other breeds would have to also be considered for the ban. Instead of considering a breed ban, it is time to create laws that will actually help prevent bite incidents. Start regulating breeders to help ensure that only dogs with sounds temperaments are being bred, make it illegal to keep dogs tied up on chains,
create stronger laws that effect irresponsible owners whose dogs bite.

This letter represents a fact-based approached and recommends great alternatives to decrease dog-bite incidents. Blame the dog and this will happen again; blame the problem and create bylaws to target these problems and you will become part of the solution.

ROAD TRIP!!

Former adopters Sophie and Bryce offered to take Coconut on a bit of a road trip to give her a bit of a break from the shelter and just to see what this girl was all about. Here is what they found out:

Coconut was an absolute pleasure to have along on our trip! She was so excited to do everything!! She picked up very quickly on her boundries and didn't even ask to share food. She seems to have a genuine interest in learning what is being asked of her and is very patient. Coconut gets very excited to meet new people but settles down quickly and has the most excellent house manners. She was very respectful on leash and even stopped to look back when she was on the long lead. At night, she settles right down and doesn't move or make a sound (but LOVES to cuddle). Coconut loves to play fetch and will bring anything back! She is very playful and even invented her own game when I wouldn't let her on my lap in the car. She would switch from each of my sides giving me a lick until she opened up an opportunity to sneak on to my lap! We did come across a few dogs and she seems just as excited to meet them as she is meeting new people.

Two of our adoption coordinators went on a little road trip, found Mae West, and without a second thought, they loaded her up and brought her home. This is the kind of dog that makes you swoon and she quickly charmed, well, pretty much everybody. Unfortunately, Mae has been diagnosed with cancer. She has been placed in a permanent foster home where she will be spoiled and adored. Please consider donating to help cover Mae's vet bills.

February is shaping up to be a busy month around the Bully Buddies camp and our adoption reps have been a busy bunch transferring dogs into our foster program. We've got a real mix of dogs right now and if you send in an application form one of our volunteers will contact you and help you find a dog that will match your life and give you plenty of love and cuddles to boot.

This girl came into our care a scrawny, malnourished puppy who was found eating garbage at a VERY young age. The recent update from her new home is that she's a whopping 92 pounds of pure love! She even had a crush on the sheep that lived on her property and would have to stop to give it kisses whenever she walked by!

This is Marty. He came in to the New West Animal Shelter last summer but we had no room in our foster program at the time. One of our volunteers brought him out to some of our training classes where he showed off that this boy was not just another pretty face, he had brains too!

We just got an update from Marty's new family:

Everything is going well over here in Victoria. Just wanted to say hi and send some newer photos of Marty. We were also wondering if anyone could recommend any agility training in Victoria? We really think Marty would love getting involved in that. Fortunately i can also report and Marty's separation anxiety has calmed down as he has settled into life with us. We are able to leave him out of the crate and he has dramatically cut down on destroying things while we are away :) thank goodness! He still has a soft spot for opening cupboards and drawers and placing utensils, pots and pans around the apartment though! Other than that Marty is wonderful and manages to amaze us constantly with how quick, smart and affectionate he is. He has become a member of the family and has easily slipped into the hearts of all of our friends and family (no matter how unsure of him they originally may have been). 2 minutes with Marty and it is hard not to immediately fall in love with him. He gladly accompanies us to parties and gatherings whenever possible and quickly becomes the center of everyone's attention.

She wasn't too sure about the whole Pit Bull thing, but true love is blind and Brutus and her were meant to be! Those that know him adore him, and those that never met him are missing out.

Creole Jumbalaya Hot Sauce still continues to be a favorite of our Training Coordinator and she gets so excited to see updated pictures of her! She continues to love life and be spoiled rotten by her mom. Her unique markings and complete ham of a personality draws people to her where she promptly covers them in kisses! She even shares her bed with her new roomate, a beagle named Harley. Although, we think Creole lucked out, her mom claims that she is the lucky one, for having the pleasure of owning her.

Mr. Moodles

Over a year ago, we were contacted by a family that had recently adopted an older dog from the shelter as they were having some troubles integrating him into their family. They loved him but their other dog wasn't too sure about having to share the house. We talked to them and gave them some tips and advice on multi-dog management but they weren't sure if it was going to work. Well, with proper introductions, good management, some patience, and a lot of love, they managed to make it work and their dog finally accepted Max into the family.

We recently recieved an email from this family letting us know that Sweet Max had passed away on Christmas Eve. Although saddened by the news, we were happy that Max was with a family that loved him and was dedicated to giving him a good home, even if it may not have been the easiest of routes. Too often, dogs end up in the shelter because people aren't willing to try and resolve any issues that come up. Max's family weren't willing to give up on him and for this we thank them.

Here is what they wanted to say about Max:

On Christmas Eve, we lost our beloved companion and best friend, Max (better known to many as Mr. Moodles). We adopted Max a year and a half ago from the Surrey SPCA. Scared and emaciated from malnutrition, neglect and abuse, he peered at us from his kennel with his little black eyes. Although we knew he was already a senior and may only live a few months, we fell in love with our little man immediately and knew we had to bring him home to be part of our family. In a matter of months, we plumped him up to a healthy weight and watched him grow into a loving and affectionate little critter. Always there to greet us with tail wags and enthusiasm, Mr. Moodles spent the last of his senior years content, warm and loved. While we're heartbroken that we'll no longer feel his precious kisses, get to rub his back and hips, which he loved so much, or hear his little grunts, we take comfort in knowing that he passed away in our arms, knowing that he was safe and loved. I can't even explain how much happiness and love our Moodley little man brought into our lives during his short time with us. Mr. Moodles is deeply missed by his Mom and Dad and his four legged 'sisters,' Millie the lab and Lucy the tabby cat. This is the way we will forever remember him. Warm and cozy in front of the fire, surrounded by love.

Living the Good Life

We recieved an update from Seren's family. Sounds like she's a pampered pooch with that rock star bully attitude that keeps people coming back for more.

Seren and her family now live in Calgary for the last year and a half. She has been attending doggy day care at our local vets. She is the favorite of all the staff. Her temperament is such that she is used as the 'test dog' to see if new dogs are suitable for the pack at the daycare. She now has two brothers, both orange tabbys. The littlest is 6 months old, they are good mates! and often play together. She enjoys her walks, and snuggles even more and loves to give us lots of 'pitbull' hugs. She has been an amazing addition to our family and has a very happy life in Calgary.

A New Year, A New Beginning

We're doing a happy dance around here as both Sabrina and Humphrey found themselves in foster to adopt home over the holidays! (Maybe it was all those kisses they gave to you-know-who) Two senior dogs in one week is a record around here, often older dogs wait for months and months before the right home comes knocking. We know that their new homes will be filled with much joy and silliness in the upcoming year.

Goodbye Sweet Ella

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ella. She put up a valiant fight but unfortunately, she was laid to rest in the arms of her adoring mom on Sunday. Right up until the last, she was out there working hard at being a breed ambassador, wooing the crowds at the craft fair only a week prior. Her time with us was short but full. She was spoiled rotten and spent her days swimming, eating baked good from coffee shops (her favorite) and snuggling and kissing all she met. Her mom gave her the life that all dogs deserve. She will live on in our very happy memories of her, she truly was one in a million. Thank you all for your support with her initial fundraiser to help raise money for her vet bills, and now in her passing, thank you for your kind words and condolences.

Well, the Bully Buddies crew has got some new faces! Some of our newest adoptables are making us wish we had an extra spot in our own homes!

Sasha is a mixy-mix girl who is kid, cat, and dog friendly. Warning: her enthusiasm is contagious!

Maika is a snorta-licious piggy princess! She loves her toys almost as much as she loves cuddling on the couch.

Newton is a dream ambassador bully who is a wiggly, smiley, happy-go-lucky bundle of goodness. He'll fit himself in just about anywhere and we'd love to see him in a home that will parade him around and show him off.Reese is a tiny package (about 40 pounds) of chocolatey sweetness who is in love with the world. At only 9 months, he'll need an owner who can continue to show him the ropes and make sure they teach him all about the importance of good manners.

An oldie but a goodie! We've got a soft spot for the seniors and Sabrina is particularly enchanting. Although her past life was no fun, she continues to bloom into the princess she was born to be.

TORONTO - An appeal to a 2007 court ruling that bans pit bulls in the province of Ontario will be heard Monday. Toronto civil rights lawyer Clayton Ruby filed the appeal, claiming the ban is unconstitutional and too vague because the definition of pit bull is too broad.The ban includes four specific breeds of pit bull terrier but also a clause that states any dogs that look "substantially similar" to pit bulls.Ruby said he'd be surprised if there were more than 150 of the specified dogs in Ontario - namely Staffordshire, American Staffordshire, pit bull, and American pit bull terriers - and that the clause could include dozens of different breeds.Ruby is arguing the case on behalf of Toronto pit bull owner Catherine Cochrane.

A few months ago, we recieved an email from a wonderful gentlemen who needed a bit of advice on Pit Bulls. See, his tenant in the basement suite had just moved out and given the Pit Bull to a friend. She ran away from her new 'home' and made it all the way back to where she used to live but alas her owner wasn't there! (She made the trek from Abbotsford to Langley and arrived exhausted with bleeding feet, poor girl.) The family had no intention of keeping her and although the woman in the basement suite was quite taken by the dog, she heard all sorts of terrible myths surrounding the breed. We recieved the email asking for advice and assistance in rehoming the girl. We talked to them, offered some tips and advice and left it at that. we were sure we'd hear from them again.

Sure enough, she never left. We recieved an email about one month later saying how the family adored her and they could not dream of giving her away.

Jump to present day....this has been a horrible summer for Pit Bulls. Hal Harris's pack of pitties in Surrey, talk of a breed ban, ugh it's enough to make any pit-owner scream! Then, we recieve this in our inbox:

Hi there,

Just thought you would like my email to the Vancouver Sun, reporter Ian Mulgrew today congratulating him on his article.

Pit Bulls Bravo and well said, Mr. Mulgrew. A light in the midst of mass hysteria is always a welcome read. About 6 months ago, a young, female Pit Bull came into our lives quite by accident. Prior to her arrival, none of her breed would have been welcome onto our property, let alone in our house. We have a couple of cats and a small dog, refugees all. From the start, she was shy and sensitive, eventually fitting into the order of things. She absolutely loves our small dog and treats like a pet of her own, on occasion giving this one attention and sometimes an unscheduled bath. The cats became used to the new addition and one of them, the Siamese, enjoys hiding and teasing her. Both have a great play. Then there is Clancy. A dark. gray and black tabby rescued on the shores of the Fraser River. I was there on quite another matter when he decided to hide in my truck and come home with me. Been here ever since and established himself as kingpin very quickly. Our new addition avoids this cat whenever she senses him near. She has tried to be friends but “Mr. Kitty” will have none of it. This Pit Bull enjoys walking, playing and to my knowledge has never bit anything or drawn blood. She is affectionate and very intelligent. The Pit Bull descriptions blaring across the airwaves and in print do not apply to this one. The proposed annihilation of the breed defies logic. You are right about the owners: they must be held accountable. A good example is the dogs in California abused by the former NFL quarterback and friends. All but one have been rehabilitated. I believe that case has recognized a non human as a victim for the first time in US law. Perhaps law student Adam Perry, who wrote a ban-the-breed article published by your paper on page A11 today, may learn something by looking it up. Unfortunately, common sense can’t be taught in a class room or learned from a book. Try life to learn this one. His compromise about not culling the existing souls, if reasonable, is somewhat encouraging but leave much to interpretation and possible abuse. I am aware of the Ontario ban and find it appalling. The owners of any vicious animal that attacks another animal or human being must face serious criminal charges in all applicable cases. And all the facts must be considered. The thinking behind such bans and proposals prompts sober reflection, particular if one applies this principle to man. Thank you for your article. I have read others you have penned / word processed and quite enjoy them. Keep up the good work!

Where did it go?

Alas, September is here. I was walking the dogs through Deer Lake this morning and the leaves are already changing. Things have been hectic around the Bully Buddies camp, as many of us have been on holidays (including Miss Ella who toured all around the Yukon!).

Between that and enjoying the sunshine with our own dogs, left little time to update.

But, we're back and ready to focus on the task at hand. Paws for a Cause is on September 14th and we'll be there with a booth and a few of our dogs to show off the bully spirit. Our Behaviour for Bullies classes is going to start again at the end of September. So stay tuned and we'll be sure to keep you all updated on the going-ons around here.

Introducing Sabrina

Pirate Peanut

Oh Peanut. The dog that survived Hurricane Katrina and found his rescuer by the name of Cheryl. The dog that came up to Vancouver in hopes of a better life. The dog that spent over a year in the shelter system waiting for his forever home to come and find him. The dog who lost his eye due to infection and while we thought this made you cuter it turned many potential adopters away. But you waited, and waited. You were holding out for the good life you were promised. You weren't going to settle for anything less than the best. And then she found you. As soon as we talked to her we knew that this was the one. Unfortunately, your time with her was too short but we could not have asked for a better home for you to spend your final days.

Here is a message from her:

My life with Peanut.....

We spent hours walking around the city, exploring every nook and cranny. Peanut really enjoyed Trout lake. There he could hang out with other dogs, watch the ducks go by and get lots of execise.People were always drawn to the sweet spirit of my one-eyed wonder. He would patiently sit and lap up all the attention from everyone that wanted to say hi. One little boy after petting Peanut for the longest time, kissed him gently where his eye used to be and hoped he felt better. Another fellow who stopped to visit had been living in New Orleans when Katrina hit. There were tears in his eyes when he found out about Peanut's history. He was thrilled to hear that Peanut had survived the storm as well. Peanut loved visiting with his 2 favourite girls, Shandi (a standard poodle) and Bunny (an afghan hound) not to mention their owner,my friend Elfie. He stayed there a couple of times when I was away and got spoiled rotten. He deserved every bit of it. Chuck and Peanut spent a lot of time together. My 2 guys played hard, wrestling and running about. Peanut worked himself into Chuck's heart really quickly and his 'no dogs on the bed' rule was first broken by, you guessed it, Chuck .-) I brought Peanut to work with me most of the time. I'm a paramedic at one of the busiest ambulance stations in B.C., the downtown eastside. At work he quickly took up residence at the end of one of the sofas. When the crews would get a chance to sit down, everyone had to take turns sitting with him. Peanut was the best stress reducer ever!! He was loved by all without a doubt. One of our paramedics who had always been frightened of pitbulls or any dog that remotely looked like one was his biggest fan. Peanut completely erased her predjudices about the breed. The love he spread was so profound that the photo of him and myself is now displayed proudly on the memory wall at our ambulance headquarters. Rest easy sweet boy....your are missed by many. I wouldn't trade a minute I had you in my life. Save me a spot over the bridge....

Unchain your Dog!

Verizon has pulled their ad featuring the two Pit Bulls, but too little too late--the damage has been done. I hope the people who came up with that brilliant advertising scheme see the following video and realize that behind each and every chained guard dog is a dog that wanted nothing more than to be a pet.

So, I have had the last few days off of work and have been watching the controversy unfold surrounding the new Verizon commercial. The fact of the matter is, whether I love the commericial or hate it (hmm, guess which one?) the ad has been extremely effective. More people, after reading about it, will have googled it on youtube. By drawing attention to the commercial we, the consumer have played directly into Verizon's hand. And it sucks. One of those you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't scenarios. And while I'm at it, as much as I know that Pit Bulls do not need anything promoting the negative images surrounding the breed, I am more upset that the company promotes animal abuse. Chained guard dogs, with no shelter and food. I have met dogs that have been rescued from this fate; they are eternally grateful to be a part of a family.

So, I couldn't resist. I too have contributed to the problem. I just had to comment.

Amanda Muir lives in a tidy East Vancouver apartment in a white stucco heritage house with a six-year-old blind cat named Zu-Zu and a 14-year-old border collie-Belgian shepherd cross named Travis.
Zu-Zu is a handsome, long-haired tabby cat who was born without eyes. She navigates her surroundings with practised ease, ears swiveling to track movement.
Travis is on medication for Cushing’s, a treatable adrenal gland condition common in older dogs. He’s slower than he used to be and has some vision problems of his own, but is otherwise healthy.
Muir occasionally refers to him as “Travis-the-dog” to distinguish him from “Travis-the-boy” – the man she’s been seeing.
Her kitchen fridge is bedecked with dog-positive magnetic messages that include “A house without a dog is not a home” and “Dogs leave paw prints on our hearts.”
The animal rights activist keeps a small photo album in the night stand beside her bed that is filled with pictures of her first pet dog, a poodle-terrier cross named Brandy.
The lace-trimmed “brag book” was put together by her late grandfather Gordon Mickey, who assumed custody of Brandy after Amanda grew up and left home.
The album was given to her when he passed away.
“He just adored her,” Muir says. “They did everything together. They were constant companions. She passed away shortly before he did.”
On the day a Leader reporter and photographer visit Muir, two other dogs are present.
One is a sociable Shar-Pei named K.T. who jams her wrinkled snout into a visitor’s hand, shamelessly angling for a treat.
The other is a timid female pit bull named Ella who slinks onto Muir’s bed and wraps herself up in the duvet cover until only a nervous nose can be seen poking out.
They are there because Muir does volunteer work with dog rescue charities, helping them train and rehabilitate foundlings and abandoned pets.
It is reasonably warm out, but Muir is wearing a long-sleeved shirt. If she wears short sleeves, sometimes people will stare at the web of scars running up both arms between her wrists and elbows.
She isn’t sure if the looks she gets are pity or horror.
“Sometimes I wonder if people think I was some kind of drug addict,” she says, managing a laugh.
After five years and countless surgeries, she has not regained full strength, and the range of motion in her left arm is limited.
“They hurt all the time,” she says without self-pity.
“I’ve seen the inside of my arms several times.”
She still has one operation left, some cosmetic surgery to make the scars less pronounced.
She’s in no hurry to go under the knife again.
Muir had been working as an SPCA animal control officer in Delta for about six years when what she refers to as “my accident” happened.
At the time she was best known as the volunteer host of the popular Delta Cable TV show ‘Live at the SPCA’ which introduced potentially adoptable animals to Delta viewers.
On a sunny June day in 2003, she picked up an injured Rottweiler named Brutus who’d been confined to a kennel in an engineering shop yard.
Everything seemed to be going well until Muir got ready to unload him at the Tsawwassen Animal Hospital in the 1800 block of 56 St.
She remembers looking in his eyes when the change occurred.
It was as though Brutus somehow went away, replaced by something evil.
“It was like something from a horror movie – it was that bad.”
He attacked, sinking his teeth into Muir’s left forearm, shattering the bones.
Then he stopped.
Eyewitnesses described a chilling standoff with the injured Muir sitting on the curb of the animal hospital parking lot while the dog faced her, wagging his tail.
His tongue was hanging out like nothing was wrong.
People came running from the hospital, a nearby gym and Southpointe Academy, but Muir warned them to keep their distance.
“Call an ambulance,” she said.
Muir recalls the madness briefly fading from the dog’s eyes.
“Then he went away again.”
The Rottweiler attacked a second time, mangling Muir’s other arm.
She screamed.
Three men from the gym grabbed Brutus and managed to drag him off Muir, forcing the snarling, snapping dog inside the veterinary clinic with the help of two other people.
She was rushed to the nearby Delta Hospital ER in Ladner, then transported to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster for surgery.
Brutus was quickly euthanized.
When she emerged from the blur of pain and emergency operations, Muir remembers wondering if she would become afraid of dogs.
She didn’t.
A year later, she went to bat for another Rottweiler, defying her superiors at the SPCA to help rescue a dog that had been declared too belligerent to save.
His name was Cheech, and the resulting controversy over his fate cost the SPCA its Delta contract.
Muir, fellow SPCA staffer Kirsten McConnell and volunteer Troy Hannefin defied an SPCA euthanasia order that declared Cheech, a former guard dog, was becoming “increasingly aggressive.”
They believed he could be rehabilitated.
“I honestly thought they would never go through with it.”
On the day Cheech was to be put down, they spirited the Rottweiler-Labrador cross away and refused to say where he was.
“That was a catalyst for so many things.”
As a result of the Cheech controversy, the municipality put the operations of the animal shelter out to bid, and the newly formed Delta Humane Society won the contract.
The new operator hired Muir as a public relations coordinator and McConnell as an animal control officer.
She still won’t say where Cheech ended up, but she knows he’s doing well.
“I get pictures sent every once in a while of a black and tan dog having the time of his life.”
Recently, the municipality of Delta took over direct day-to-day operation of the animal shelter after negotiations on a new contract with the Humane Society fell apart.
By then, Muir had already moved on.
She was forced to give up working with dogs full-time because of her arm injuries.
“Animals wiggle,” Muir observes, and she just doesn’t have the strength.
She now works in retail, but still volunteers with dog rescue charities, including Shar-Pei Rescue, Doberman Rescue and “Bully Buddies” – a group devoted to rehabilitating pit bulls, American bull dogs and Staffordshire terriers, and educating the public about the breeds.
A few weeks ago Muir was in Trout Lake Park when she came across a man walking a big Rottweiler.
The dog seemed friendly, so she knelt down to greet the canine on his level and petted the animal’s head.
The dog’s owner said he was impressed at her cool, saying some people find the breed intimidating.
“I’ve had a lot of experience with them,” Muir replied.
She didn’t elaborate.

Hot Fun in the Summer Sun

We had an absolutely amazing day for our BBQ. We all crossed our fingers that it wouldn't rain and boy, it must've worked because it was a scorcher of a day. But we donned are floppy sun hats and sunscreen and headed out to Robson Park. We had an excellent turnout and we must say that the kiddie pool was a total hit with the pitties.

Tons of games, events, Marlo even slipped the judge the tongue in the kissing contest. Oh Marlo...you brindle beauty you.

A big thanks to all those of both the human and the canine variety that came out and showed off that pitty pride. Everyone was very well-behaved and showing off just how wonderful these dogs truly are. A special thanks go out to our BBQ masters- Mike, Barry, and Mike; Wendy the behind the scene organized queen; Michelle and Sam; Sarah--for rocking the obstacle course and the doggy backpacks; Lex--for being an extra set of hands if we needed it; and if we've forgotten anyone we're sorry--the sun fried our brains a little bit!

My Pit Bull has a First Name

It's O-S-C-A-R!

I Love Oscar. Oscar has temporarily been crashing at my house until he could find a more permanent foster spot (thank-you Erin!) as my house is pretty full already. He is one of the best foster dogs I have ever had. Mellow, confident, and easy-going. This is him on his first night with me. My nephew Beck was spending the night and the two of them were joined at the hip. Oscar wouldn't leave his side and even went down the slide with him at the park!

Seriously, Oscar will fit himself in just about anywhere as long as he's got a comfy spot on the bed and some belly rubs to be had. Have I mentioned that I totally love this dog?

But it was lots of fun anyways! For the third year in a row, Big Dog Little Dog Bakery has invited us to partake in their annual parade. This year, adoptable cutey pie Sprout and alumni Arthur went off to show off their Pit Bull Spirit.

Whew! After the parade, Sprout was tuckered. After all, it's hard work to look that good all the time.

Wow! This is amazing news. Let's hope this has a ripple effect on other countries to actually look at the facts when considering their dangerous dog policies.

The Netherlands to lift 15-year ban on owning, breeding pit bulls

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - The Dutch government says it will lift a long-standing ban on pit bulls because it did not lead to any decrease in bite incidents.
Agriculture Minister Gerda Verburg has informed parliament of the decision, which follows the advice of a commission of experts appointed to review the policy. Instead, the country will focus on enforcing local leashing laws and owner education programs.
Spokesman Koen Geelink said Monday the ministry hopes to have a new policy in place by year-end in which dogs that have displayed aggression will be tested by an expert.
The country banned the breeding and possession of pit bulls in 1993, after three children were killed by the dogs.

Update on Ella

Hello,
Just wanted to give you all a quick update on Ella. She just came out of surgery and although she did make it through the surgery, they realized that the tumor was much more invasive than we originally thought and they were unable to operate on it. Although we are very sad by the long-term prognosis, we are happy that she made it through the surgery (it was a risky procedure!). And the good news is that Miss Ella will be coming home tonight to her VERY OWN HOME!! Sam is officially adopting her and she will spend her days being spoiled rotten and loved very much.

I don't think any of us will sleep tonight, we are pretty worried about Ella's surgery tomorrow. She's a pretty special little lady and we are just hoping that everything goes well...Fingers crossed...

Update for Kaida's Family

Kaida was one of Merry's pups from the litter we adopted out in January. We knew this little girl as Ivy, the tiny spitfire of the group. Her new parents have done a fabulous job at ensuring she grows up to be a stellar ambassador for the breed.

Here is an update from them:

We are doing great! Kaida (Ivy) is doing really well. We hope all her siblings are doing well. We were very curious as to how big all her siblings where now. Kaida is around 30-35 pounds now and is a full of energy! We went to the Western Canada American Pit Bull Terrier Club fun show on May 24th. Kaida entered into the best brindle, best couch potato, and 4-6 month female puppy confirmation. We are proud that they announced her 3rd place in the 4-6 month old confirmation. We included a picture with her ribbon.

Kaida loves to play with other dogs and kids. Her favourite duo is a 10 month old dalmation, Pongo, and his 4.5 year old owner, Kieran. It's pretty wild when Pongo and Kaida play as they rip around the house and outside then back inside then out again! It's kinda funny though, as soon as you think she is getting tired out, BANG!! she starts running circle laps like her tail is on fire! Absolutly hilarious to watch.

WOW! Your generosity never ceases to amaze us. We raised $2754.50 with our online raffle for Ella and if she had her way, she would personally come to each and everyone of your houses and give you a great big kiss! Congrats to Gen, Gloria, Cheryl, and Roxanne for winning the prizes! Thank you to all who donated prizes and all of you who bought raffles. She goes in for surgery on Friday so please keep sending out thos positive thoughts for her. We will keep you posted on her recovery!

One of our former adopters wrote a fantastic letter published in the Langley Times.

Editor: If all pit bull owners must muzzle their “dangerous” dogs in public, then so must owners of all other “dangerous” dogs. This would be breeds such as German shepherds, dobermans, rottweilers, chihuahuas, cocker spaniels, and every other dog that is feeling cranky and isn’t comfortable with children or strangers.
There is a reason behind the support of many dog owners for the saying “Ban the deed, not the breed.” Any dog may bite a person. Any dog may be turned into a dangerous dog, either through training, neglect, or abuse.
The owner is the one responsible for making a dog “dangerous.” An irresponsible dog owner creates the situation in which a person or another dog is put in danger.
Owners of dogs (with a bad reputation or not) must take precautions to guard against having accidents happen: learn the body language of their dog, learn how dogs interact with the world around them, don’t allow just anyone to approach and get in the dog’s face, know your dog. Owners must avoid situations where the dog doesn’t do well. Have a fully fenced yard that the dog can’t get out of, be around to supervise the dog — especially around children; teach the people you encounter what you’ve learned.
Regardless of what breed of dog you have, be responsible.
